Steve Barrett OBE
Steve Barrett OBE, is a retired civil servant, who held a variety of senior management positions within the Scottish Prison Service. He was also the Head of the Prison Service in both the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Cayman Islands.
Steve was diagnosed with MND (Progressive Muscle Atrophy) in 2021 having first noticed symptoms some 5-6 years previously. His diagnosis resulted in his return to Scotland from the Cayman Islands in December 2021. He was awarded an OBE in 2022 for his services to prisons in Scotland, Turks and Caicos and the Cayman Islands.
He now spends most of his time being looked after by his amazing wife, Fiona, and either thinking about, or watching his beloved Heart of Midlothian FC.
He has been engaged with MND-SMART, which he refers to as his ‘lifejacket’ since April 2022 and in early 2024, joined the Patient Advisory Group.
