MND-SMART Opens in York and Scarborough Hospitals

Jun 2025: York and Scarborough Hospitals are the newest centres to open recruitment to MND-SMART!

We’re pleased to announce that York & Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have joined the MND-SMART team. Led by Principal Investigator Dr Malcolm Proudfoot, York Hospital and Scarborough Hospital commenced recruitment to the trial in June 2025!

Dr Malcolm Proudfoot, Consultant Neurologist and Principal Investigator said

We are thrilled to now be able to offer more people with MND the opportunity to participate in clinical research, looking for better treatments against this difficult illness. Thanks to the MND-SMART trial, people in both York and Scarborough will now be able to join this important, well designed study, without travelling long distances. It’s a big step forward for our service.

The launch of these two new recruiting centres reflects our commitment to ensure that people living with motor neuron disease have access to research opportunities.

MND-SMART Co-Lead Investigator Prof. Suvankar Pal said:

We are continuously striving to increase equity of access for people to MND-SMART and are delighted that the dynamic teams at York and Scarborough are joining our national community.’

We are committed to opening more sites across the UK in 2025.
